ABOUT PINE MOUNTAIN SCHOOL OF ZEN ARTS
The Pine Mountain School of Zen Arts is located at an altitude of 5,000 feet about 90 minutes north of Santa Monica, California. It is a sacred space of great tranquility and beauty. When you enter the school, the concerns of your everyday life melt away and you are surrounded by divine energies. At the end of your
"Deep in the wild mountains, is a strange marketplace, where you can trade the hassle and noise of everyday life, for eternal Light."
Zen profoundly influenced the culture of China, Korea and Japan. This influence was seen in all aspects of life including martial arts, gardening, music, ceramics, painting, the tea ceremony and even architecture. The foundation of all of these disciplines was meditation. Zen does not depend on words, dogma or rituals. It is the direct experience of the pure Essence of Mind, one’s Buddha Nature.
Zen is universal and can be practiced by anyone of any religion, or none at all. Zen is meditation. You can be a Zen Christian, a Zen Hindu, a Zen Buddhist, a Zen Jew, a Zen agnostic or atheist.
The Zen Arts are a comprehensive and practical system to develop all aspects of a human being; mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.
It is through the practice of the Zen arts, and not through rules or theory that moral and spiritual values are taught in China and Japan. The Zen arts, such as meditation, the martial arts (aikido, iaido
and kyudo), Zen gardening, the Way of Tea, the Way of Flowers, are ways to develop all aspects of the individual. Each art is more than a mere craft, for each takes as its goal not just the teaching of ethics but the formation of the ethical individual. Transformation is the result of diligent practice and each art recognizes the importance of the body. Training the mind as well as the body results in important insights, habits, and attitudes that involve the whole person, both body and mind.
